Dr. Shirin Issa moved to Seattle in 2016.  As a board certified Adult Headache Neurologist,  Dr. Issa diagnoses and manages patients with a myriad of headache disorders including but not limited to chronic migraine headaches, tension-type headaches, cluster headaches, hemicrania continua, new daily persistent headache and trigeminal neuralgia. Dr. Issa is committed to helping patients understand and gain control of their headaches. She believes that treatment approaches should be holistic; they can range from natural minerals and vitamins to pharmacological medications or Botox injections. Dr. Issa also advocates using nerve blocks and trigger point injections for pain relief. Dr. Issa tailors her approach to the individual and their lifestyle. The first step is completing a comprehensive questionnaire and talking through the patient’s individual situation. From there, Dr. Issa can help patients balance lifestyle triggers like mediation overuse, sleep habits, diet, caffeine intake and battles with anxiety or depression. Dr. Issa’s goal is to help her patients understand and manage their headaches within their comfort zone and with ultimate success.

After receiving her medical degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine, Dr. Issa completed her adult neurology residency at the Albert Einstein School of Medicine, Montefiore Medical Center. During her neurology residency, she was inspired to learn about headaches and their treatment while doing an elective at the Montefiore Headache Center, the first center in the world focused exclusively on the diagnosis and treatment of headache disorders and facial pain in adults and adolescents. And, thus began her journey to pursue an (United Council for Neurologic Subspecialties) accredited headache fellowship at the Montefiore Headache Center under the privileged mentorship of Dr. Richard Lipton, whose contributions to the field of headache are immeasurable.

Since then, Dr. Issa has been committed to diagnosing, educating and helping patients lead a life uninterrupted by headaches. She joined the Montefiore Headache Center as an Assistant Professor of Neurology in 2011 and along with patient care, taught incoming headache fellows and medical residents. In 2013, she relocated to Northwest Arkansas and was the only board-certified headache specialist in the area. In a region where headache disorders remained undiagnosed and access to tertiary headache care was a challenge, Dr. Issa partnered with Mercy Hospital to develop a headache clinic exclusively dedicated to diagnosing, treating and preventing headache disorders. Demystifying myths by educating patients that headaches were indeed not ‘normal,’ and that they most certainly could be managed, Dr. Issa’s focus was to work with the individual patient to determine what type of headache they had, and then together, create an approach in which patients were comfortable and successful.

Dr. Issa relocated to Seattle in 2016. She and her husband enjoy being in the Pacific Northwest. They are busy transitioning and exploring the region with their family.
